It is the minimization of identity.
A good system does not ask who you are.
It shows what is valid.#Cypherpunk was never about hiding people.
It was about removing the need to trust them.#Potatoes beat tokens ;-)))… pic.twitter.com/bm0xIi1SHR

Proposal for the writing series “From Commons to NFTs”
An expanded series initiated by Shu Lea Cheang, Felix Stalder and Ewen Chardronnet

Stefan M. Seydel/sms ;-) works at the intersection of art, technology and social infrastructure. His projects move between media art, network theory and practical commons experiments. His work has been shown at the Royal Academy of Arts London, the Deutsches Historisches Museum Berlin and the Cabaret Voltaire Zurich. He was a jury member for #NextSociety at Ars Electronica and was invited to work at the Vilém Flusser Archive in Berlin. He is co-author of the two books “Die Form der Unruhe”, #dfdu (Junius Verlag, Hamburg). His main practice has been writing in the net (@sms2sms — a handle Hannah Arendt might have appreciated) since the early days of the internet — vlogging at WikiDienstag.ch and blogging at dissent.is.
#TheVeryRealCryptoMovement
The series “From Commons to NFTs” has so far brought together seven smart voices from art, theory, and crypto culture. It examines the transformation of “digital culture” from commons-based forms toward tokenized forms of ownership.
After reading it, one thing above all stays with me: the debate moves within the space of objects, images, tokens, titles of ownership, and markets. That reminds me of important elements of the cultural form of modernity. A form toward which I feel as intensely repulsed as I learned from the Jewish arch-prophet Isaiah in his “Zaw La Zaw” (Isaiah 28:10). What interests me is something else entirely: not the object, but the infrastructure.
And yet this is precisely something that can indeed be read out of, and taken from, the seven contributions so far:
- Commons are infrastructure.
NFTs are titles of ownership. - Net culture is abundance.
NFTs enable scarcity. - Blockchain is infrastructure.
NFTs are market products. - The art market tests tokens.
Commons are rights of use. - The open question is not NFT.
The open question is how free and open infrastructure can be designed.
This is a stimulating and suggestive approach, and one I would like to build on…
